Amidst the current medical environment of ever increasing time constraints, burgeoning technical complexity, and the aging population, fears of malpractice litigation and the perception of a need to practice “defensive medicine” only impair the medical practitioner’s ability to provide compassionate quality care. This 60-minute webinar will review the factors that increase risk for medical malpractice claims and will recommend practical behavioral techniques that allow medical practitioners to effectively interact with patients and their families in a manner that reduces these risks. A practical literature-based approach to medical errors with emphasis on the proper use of apology will be presented. Finally, particular high-risk aspects of providing care to the rapidly growing senior population will be reviewed including a review of how to perform a legally binding medical assessment of a senior’s decision-making capacity.
As a result of this presentation, participants will be able to:
-
Recognize the crucial relationship between physician behaviors and malpractice claims.
-
Effectively address emotion, conflict and deadlock in patient/family interactions.
-
Learn benefits of apology in the setting of a medical error.
-
Perform a meaningful evaluation of a person’s decision-making capacity.
What is a Webinar?
Webinars are live, interactive Web-based seminars that allow participants to view materials over the Internet and access the audio by dialing a toll-free number. Participants will have the opportunity to pose questions to the expert faculty. Handout materials will be provided, so participants can also listen via the telephone only.
Webinars are an inexpensive and logistically simple way for health care providers and executives to hear national speakers and content experts address hot topics in patient safety, clinical risk reduction, regulatory and accreditation issues, and general liability trends.
Registrants will receive a confirmation e-mail with connection information and instructions to download the handout materials approximately one week prior to the program.
If you are unable to attend a conference, the audio portion of each webinar is available on a compact disk for you to purchase. CDs come with handout materials. For one flat rate, our CDs can assist in educating an unlimited number of staff to keep your organization running safely and efficiently.
