The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) supports the expansion of the MOREOB patient safety program in the U.S. as referenced in the October 2009 edition of ACOG Today.
Program Description
MOREOB stands for Managing Obstetrical Risk Efficiently. This is a continuous patient safety improvement program of Salus Global Corporation involving physicians, midwives, and nurses, as well as the full administrative and governance structure of a hospital. The Program was initially developed by the Patient Safety Division of the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada (SOGC). Now, through a partnership between Salus Global and The Risk Management and Patient Safety Institute (RM&PSI), the MOREOB Program is being offered to hospitals throughout the United States.
The focus of the MOREOB Program is to improve patient safety, reduce clinical risk and events (near misses, incidents, and adverse events), and eliminate the culture of blame. This is achieved by integrating evidencebased practice content with the principles of high reliability organization systems (HROs) in a changed model of practice that is focused on team function. HROs have the following principles:

Safety is the priority and is everyone’s responsibility

Operations are a team effort

Communication is highly valued

Hierarchy disappears in an emergency — decisions about safety can be made at any level of the
organization

Emergencies are rehearsed

There is a multidisciplinary review of harm events

Through the adoptions of these principles within the hospital culture, the MOREOB Program works to build a community of practice founded on teamwork and collaboration, with patient safety and quality of care as the focal points of the obstetrical service.
