This program will explore the building blocks of effective communication. It will provide an understanding of the barriers to effective communication and practical strategies to address these barriers, including strategies to minimize the impact of medical illiteracy. The program also touches on strategies for communication with difficult patients and families.

This presentation will discuss obesity prevalence, facility preparedness, and clinical risks for the obese patient. We will demonstrate the importance of health care team education and sensitivity training in caring for and communicating with the obese patient. Unique risks for small and rural organizations including staffing, equipment, and transportation capabilities will be discussed. The clinical risks of an obese obstetrical pateint will be presented.
