Program Description
The Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act (EMTALA) affects all clinicians who provide triage care for pregnant women. EMTALA has specific regulations for hospitals relative to women in active labor. Violations can carry fines up to $50,000 and possible termination of the hospital or physician's Medicare provider agreement. It is critical for clinicians performing obstetric triage to understand the duties and obligations of this law. This important webinar will focus on the key elements of this federal regulation that have an impact on obstetrics including: triage versus medical screening exam (MSE), qualified medical personnel (QMP), emergency medical condition (EMC), stabilization, and transfers.  Documentation requirements for both the sending and receiving facility will be presented.

As a result of this presentation, participants will be able to:
  • Articulate the history and background of EMTALA
  • Identify EMTALA responsibilities
  • Recognize EMTALA definitions/acronyms
  • Summarize what EMTALA means to OB
