Program Description
Individuals who are charged with the responsibility of ensuring that their organization's sterilization and disinfection practices are appropriate depend upon the CDC and other entities for guidance and direction. Emerging pathogens, new environmental concerns, and increased publicity regarding health care acquired infections have created challenges to organizations as they strive to make sure that the equipment they use in the delivery of patient care remains safe. In late 2008, the CDC published an updated guideline which centers on these challenges. The purpose of this program is to address disinfection and sterilization practices and to discuss new subject matter in the update guidelines that may require organizational policy development and/or revision.

As a result of this presentation, participants will be able to:
  • Discuss applications and differences between cleaning, disinfection and sterilizaiton.
  • Describe how the 2008 CDC guideline revisions can help determine the choice of disinfectant, concentration and exposure time.
  • State two difficulties associated with implementing the Spaulding classification scheme and how current guidelines can help mitigate these.
  • Identify three new subjects in the CDC's new guidelines that may require organizational policy development and/or revision.

You will receive a confirmation e-mail with a link and instructions to download the audio MP3 file and handout materials.
